AIRBORNE POLLUTION
CONTROL TO BUILD PROPRIETARY ADVANCED
POLLUTION CONTROL FACILITY
Ground-Breaking
Process Reduces Harmful Emissions
& Turns Pollution Into Fertilizer
(CALGARY,
AB - May 28th, 2002) Airborne
Pollution Control Inc. (Airborne)
has partnered with three industry
leaders to conduct the first-ever
field testing of its proprietary and
ground-breaking multi-pollutant control
process (the Airborne Process). Together
with The Babcock & Wilcox Company
and USFilter, Airborne will build
a demonstration facility in Kentucky
at the Ghent generating facility which
is operated by LG&E Energy Corp. (LG&E)
subsidiary Kentucky Utilities.
With 56% of North
America's electrical power being generated
from coal, the Airborne Process addresses
a global concern by removing sulfur
dioxide (SO2), sulfur trioxide (SO3),
nitrogen oxides (NOx), and mercury
from plant emissions. The scrubbing
agent used to remove the pollutants
is sodium bicarbonate, a compound
similar to household baking soda.
Unlike other scrubbing procedures
the sodium bicarbonate is regenerated
in the process reducing operating
costs, increasing efficiencies, reducing
waste and most impressively, the Airborne
Process turns the pollution into a
high-quality granular fertilizer.
While all components
of the Airborne Process have proven
viable in the power, chemical and
fertilizer industries, this will be
the first full-scale test of the combined
technologies. Following a successful
demonstration later this year, LG&E
may capitalize on its investment in
Airborne by having the first production
facility in North America built at
the Ghent generating facility in Kentucky.
"Our company has
been at the forefront of pollution
control equipment ever since we brought
our first scrubbers on line in the
early 1970s. We are pleased to be
able to continue to play a role in
the development of the latest environmental
technologies. If this process works
as expected, it would be a monumental
breakthrough in our industry." Caryl
Pfeiffer, Director of Environmental
Affairs, LG&E Energy Airborne Pollution
Control Inc. is a Calgary, Alberta
based Private Corporation that has
developed and has exclusive rights
to patents throughout the world for
an advanced pollution control process
(the Airborne Process) for utilities
that generate electrical power from
coal-fired power plants. The Airborne
Process allows the benefits of this
plentiful and inexpensive resource
to be capitalized on in an environmentally
and economically responsible manner.
