U.S. Operations

Two utility businesses that are regulated in Kentucky by the Kentucky Public Services Commission, and a number of unregulated businesses.

Regulated businesses

  • Louisville Gas and Electric Company, an electricity and gas utility based in Louisville, Kentucky, serving customers in Louisville and sixteen surrounding counties
  • Kentucky Utilities Company, an electricity utility, based in Lexington, Kentucky, serving 77 Kentucky counties and five counties in Virginia.

They have a joint generation capacity of 7,300 MW and serve 840,000 electricity customers and 290,000 natural gas customers over a transmission and distribution network covering some 27,000 square miles (70,000 square km). They provide some of the lowest-cost energy in the U.S. to industrial, commercial and residential customers, and are being brought together through our ‘One Utility’ initiative.

Unregulated businesses

  • 50 percent stakes in an operational plant in Texas and one under construction in Georgia (total of 1,000 MW)
  • stakes in three Argentinean gas distribution companies
  • Western Kentucky Energy which operates and leases four coal-fired plants owned by Big Rivers Electric Corporation in Western Kentucky. Combined they generate 1,700 MW of electricity
  • LG&E Operating Services which operates independent wind, coal-fired, and steam generation in six states
  • Enertech which provides energy efficient building services
  • CRC-Evans, an international company that provides equipment and services used in the construction and rehabilitation of gas and oil pipelines
  • a wind turbine in Tarifa, Spain
